Lingua Mind Move is a group located in Bozeman, MT. We are parents, teachers, and community members increasing world language exposure for children through film, music, movement, and games. Lingua Mind Move is currently involved in a world language and video production club at Irving Elementary School, in Bozeman, Montana.

Club Practice - Cheyenne


For Wednesday May 14th, we will be filming the Cheyenne In-Class Video!

We will be both practicing and filming Wednesday, so come with a good attitude and your Irving t-shirts (if you have one). If you don't have one, we will give you one.

In the Cheyenne video we will be introducing the kindergarten and 1st grade audience to numbers (counting), body parts and a few animals. Actors, don't worry, you will not have to speak Cheyenne! In the film, Florence Running Wolf will be speaking the words before and after you speak them in English.

Cheyenne actors, please memorize the lines associated with your name.  Your lines are in quotes (""). The action we will be asking you to do are in italics following the line. 

Remember, speak slowly and strongly. The audio of Florence speaking is just below. Listen to it. With your own voice, you will want to match the tempo of her voice (which is slow and steady).  Note: It may help to practice in a mirror, or for your parents or siblings.

Number 1: Xada
  • "I have one head." (hold up 1 finger on one hand, then point tp your head with both pointer fingers)
  • "With my one head, I nod." (as above, then bring arms down, stand still and nod your head deeply and slowly)
  • "I have one body." (hold up 1 finger on one hand, then with both hands follow loose outline your body starting from head down to thighs)
  • "With my 1 body, I turn." (as above, turn slowly clockwise--count in your mind 1,2,3)
Number 2: Ciara
  • "I have two arms." (hold up two fingers, then raise your arms up and out to the sides, parallel to ground)
  • "With my two arms, I soar like an eagle." (as above, then as you speak "soar like an eagle", twist your body and slowly soar around)
  • "I have two legs." (hold up 2 fingers, then point to your legs with your pointer fingers)
  • "With my two legs, I hop like a rabbit 1, 2, 3." (as above, while speaking "hop like a rabbit" crouch into a rabbit stance, while counting 1, 2, 3 hop around largely)
Number 3: Michael
  • "I have three fingers." (hold up three fingers on one hand at head height)
  • "With my three fingers, I count 1, 2, 3." (as above, then close hand into fist and then bring out one at a time while counting to three)
  • "With my three fingers I count 1, 2, 3." (Repeat the above)
Number 4: Cam
  • "I have four limbs." (hold out 4 fingers with one hand, when saying "limbs" move to arms stretched out above your head at angles and your legs spread out wide, making an x with your body while standing and saying sentence)
  • "With my four limbs, I swim like a fish." (as above, then when saying "swim like a fish" place hands together out in front of you and sway them similar to a fish moving)
  • "With my four limbs, I crawl like a bear." (as above, when saying "crawl like a bear" crawl strongly on all fours slowly)
Number 5: Adah
  • "I have five toes." (hold up 5 fingers with one hand, then hold out bare foot and point to toes with the one hand)
  • "With my five toes, I wiggle." (as above, then wiggle your toes)
  • "With my five toes I jump." (as above, then jump on one foot, the same foot your pointed to)

Cheyenne Health Enhancement Game:

Cheyenne Animal Version of Giants, Wizards & Elves (which is a fun and active take-off from the familiar "Rocks, Paper, Scissors" game)

Game Rules:
  1. Break students into 2 equal groups
  2. Each group is asked to gather far away from the other group, while quietly deciding what they are going to be (options are Bear, Eagle or Rabbit)
  3. Once decided, groups line up facing away from each other (1:1) on an imaginary straight line
  4. In Cheyenne, game organizers counts "1,2,3"
  5. At the end of "3": game players make their animal's motion and says the animal's name in Cheyenne
  6. The "trump animal" (see the trump order below) chases the other group and attempts to tag (To keep game more organized, tagger can only tag the person directly opposite them them in line)
  7. Those tagged by the trump animal player joins their group
  8. Repeat with newly formed groups
  9. Note: If each group chooses the same animal, then return to separate groups and choose new animal

Animal "Trump" Order:
Bear (nákohe): Beats Eagle. Motion: wide leg bent stance with "claws up", growling "nákohe"

Eagle (ma'xevé'késo): Beats Rabbit. Motion: arms wide in soaring configuration. Cries out "ma'xevé'késo"

Rabbit (vóhkóóhe): Beats Bear. Motion: in slight crouches, with ears created with wiggling hands on either side of head, says in smallish type voice, "vóhkóóhe"

How to say 1, 2, 3 in Cheyenne:
One =   pronounced "nish"
Two = pronounced "nah"
Three = pronounced "nif"
